59.2% ELECTRICITY BILL INCREMENT IS VERY INSENSITIVE

Critical Thinkers International has learnt of an insensitive increment in Utility Tariffs(59.2% and 67.2% increments in electricity and water respectively) recently announced by the Public Utility Regulation Commission(PURC) and will take effect from Monday, 14th December, 2016.

We have learnt that, the PURC had agreed to this electricity bill increment for the reason that, it is a way to end this power crisis(Dumsor), but it is sad, disrespectful and insensitive on Ghanaians because the PURC certainly know this is not the solution to the power crisis.

Note, this is about the third time since 2012 they have made such increment with same reason but as we all know, they have only been able to push this Dumsor crisis from a bad to a worse and speedily heading to a worst.

We are shocked the PURC have allowed for this because simple knowledge of which PURC is aware is that, the reasons which has caused government to push for an increment in the electricity bill is because of its mischievous agenda to push down its debt it owes ECG and VRA down the throat of the poor ordinary Ghana which as a result is making the various Power Generators(Public and Private) not to fully help supply the whole Ghana with uninterrupted supply of electricity and through that help end the Dumsor.

Note, Government through VALCO and some state institutions/industries owe ECG and VRA close to about 700m dollars with Government owing ECG alone close to about 580million dollars.

It is also rumoured that some private companies/institutions/industries which are friends of the Government also owe ECG very huge sums of money.

Again note that, majority of the individual Ghanaian consumers have always been paying their electricity bills fully because of the ECG's mostly drastic measures to make sure every single home which enjoys from the National grid pays, with the cost of the few who escape payment being very negligible.

We as a result of the explaination and facts above strongly condemn the decision by the PURC to push the obligation of the Government honouring its debts down on the poor innocent citizens of Ghana to pay for it rather. 

Eventhough an increment should have been good, we see this one very wrong because it is more of a rob of a Peter(Citizens of Ghana) to pay a Paul(Debt of Government)

We believe the many poor Ghanaians who have even been made poorer under this NDC/President Mahama government shouldn't be further burdened with the debtedness of the Government to the  ECG and VRA after it had already been forced to take up some of the Government's debts through the previous increments PURC had pushed on them in the past.

Rather, we will recommend the PURC to hold the bull by the horn and either force or advice (which ever is in their legal jurisdiction) the government to pay all its electricity debts or its debts to ECG and VRA fully so that the ECG can through that also settle its debts to various Power Generation companies in the country, so that, they can also through that maintain, repair and buy fuel for their plants to help give the whole Ghana an uninterrupted electricity(an end of Dumsor).
